Blog

As a point of clarification, I used to be the administrator of the blog but passed that duty to Cameron McGinnis, your local president and so that is why most of the posts I've put up in the past come under 'ODOT President'... In the future my posts will continue to be under odotorganizer and Mac's will be under 'ODOT President'...

There has been a lot of personal insults posted over the last couple days so I have deleted those comments. Also I will screen the comments in the near future so we can continue to use the blog to build your union and not personally attack folks. If we do not get those kind of comments I will open it back up and I promise in the meantime to only screen comments out that attack others or are obviously posted anonymously by management :) If you have questions about this you can email me at barnardt@opeuseiu.org.

I saw that one in the last bargaining update that was up last night but didn't notice any others. Hopefully the moderation doesn't cut off what needs to be a useful communications tool, needs to be free flow as possible to be useful to state workers.

odotorganizer,

Myself and many folks that work within 200 miles of Cameron McGinnis have called him Mac Daddy for years, not as an insult but he fits the name really well and I've never heard him take offense. With a non paid actual elected worker being the administrator of the blog I hope to get off on the correct foot with him. Sorry if you thought my questions were insulting...I tried to make them all thought provoking to obtain answers I have sought from SEIU for years...What a great forumn to find out the answers.

Sorry if I have insulted anyone that was not my intent at all but the truth and facts of thoughtful questions should be presented to the workers in ODOT. A union should be open and especially a blog to free exchange of ideas as long as insults aren't intentionally meant to be harmful. Which none of mine have meant to be purposely...email loses intent if it isn't read in context the author meant...I have that problem quite a bit from other folks electronic transmissions.

What do we as workers think the head elected leader of SEIU 503 is doing to the membership currently during this highly critical time of bargaining? I see it as a huge personal insult and money grab at our dues to which the workers have no control over the situation. This is something that needs to be discussed. This is not a personal attack on an individual it is expressing a feeling and wanting answers that many of my brothers and sisters in ODOT Local 730 have been asking.

The little trash cans are cute but show how undemocratic and stifling the workers feel about their union. No wonder the apathy is so rampant when the workers are not allowed to ask legitimate questions and seek truth and justice within the answers.

I am not insulted by mac daddy; knock yourselves out. The insults which were removed were personal attacks on other Local 730 members. We are not going there on this blog.

The idea with the Local 730 blog is to communicate more effectively with the Local members. Each time we have gotten together with ODOT folks we ask them what problems they see. Communication is not always the biggest problem, but it is on every list, near the top.

We have been discouraged from using the weblog. It is open to anyone who knows the address; not just Local 730 laborers. It can not be tightly controlled. Those insults could have been posted by someone who is not a member, someone who wants to create trouble for Labor.

I can tell you that if you are unhappy with me or our Local your comments will get posted. Being critical does not mean being uncivil. I welcome your comments; we cannot fix anything if we hide.

I do not have enough time to edit submissions. If you want to contribute - edit yourself and don't make it personnal.

I look forward to hearing from our Local both good and bad. I look forward to Local 730 growing stronger together. mac

Hey Mac, I got this postcard with all the officers names and email and the web addresses. But the last two - Coalition Website www.seiu503.org/odot07 and www.seiu503.org/Local730 don't work. What's up with that?

The postcard address for the coalition website www.seiu503.org/odot07 should work... however the locals on line site for ODOT is actually www.seiu503.org/odotlocal not /local730.... if we can change it to be consistent i will try to get it fixed.... perhaps Betty could answer that piece

OK all working now. Suggest on www.seiu503.org/odotlocal you put links to the other two pages -- and visa versa on the other two pages.

That sounds like a good idea. I will try to fix that in the next couple days.
